Since this place is a film making forum. I thought Id actualy post a topic that is related to filmmaking.

But then I thought sod it Ill ask this instead.

DVD's I love em. I just reached the 147 mark in my collection. I was wondering do any of you guys watch them. I think there the real filmmakers format. I mean dvds have been my film school. You have perfect picture and sound. You get perfect freeze frame. Slow motion. Frame by frame advance. When Im watching a movie and I wonder how somthing was done. I can go back and work it out. The best example was when watching snatch the other day that crazing into when they introduce all the characters. That looked so complacated. But when I checked it out in frame by frame I realised it was all done with wipes and a few fancy transitions. I would never have worked that oput otherwise.

Then there is all the extras that come with them. The best being Directors commentary tracks. These are verry cool. Its like a one on one conversation with your favourate directors. This is something that has never been available to generations before ours.

When the only way to get this kind of info was from film schools.

Ok. Sorry for going on again.
I would just be intrested to know who else think dvd is a great learning tool for filmmakers.

I find them useful, if only to find out how boring Ridley Scott's voice is when he talks biggrin

Some of the ones with commentary are great for following the process, but why are half of the DVDS out now just the film? I got Blade Runner and it's got bugger all else!

The other thing is... why is the film on the 2001 DVD different to the one I know? I didn't think it had had a director's cut...

    cheers

    Paul

PS American History X on DVD in Asda cost me a fiver! cool

    Curtin-Parloe- How was it different?
I think DVD's are a great learning tool.
I really enjoy the director's commentaries, with the exception of Ridley Scotts, could a man be any more pretentious and boring???
I've learned alot by listening to the commentaries, in fact, the improved picture quality and sound is only a small part of it for me, I really like all the extras that are included that you miss out on with VHS.
The main gripe I have about DVD's is there needs to be standards... Every compant needs to decide on one case design, I hate those cheap cardboard fronted jobs, and also the ones where the disc is recessed in the case so it won't come out easily. Technically, there needs to be some standards, some longer movies like "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly" freeze up at a layer change on my player and Dreamwork's discs (Gladiator, The Haunting)skip, jerk and freeze 9 times out of 10 that I try to play them, and that just pisses me off considering I've just paid hard attained cash to watch a movie I really want to, only to sit there and watch it freeze up.

Video IS a good thing, how else are we gonna know who robbed the Quik-Mart?

It had an interval, and less bits of Frank Poole getting wasted (by Hal, not a drunken binge) The other thing was the flight from moonbase to Tycho in that Eagle(space1999) type thing.
Of course, I could have nodded off biggrin
It seemed like a not-director's(editor's?) cut, and seemed to benefit IMHO.

I have a problem with the Siege, that freezes at the 69th minute - you have to stop and restart from a few seconds after!
I also noticed some weird sync problems part way through. It must have been made with a pinnacle dc10+(not really wink )

    cheers

    I agree.

The fight club commentary gets a bit pretentious, though smile

I thought the Fight Club commentry was pretty funny.

Another must-listen-to commentry is Blade, you'll learn how Fincher chucked around the old Budhist belief about killing your mother, father and teacher when he got a look in on the script. Which as it happens they also talk about on the Fight Club commentary. Plus Snipes hits the mark when he describes the difference between American and Eastern action movies.
